Sun Tzu and Anime: Kekkon Yubiwa Monogatari Character Analysis

March is here, so let's thaw out with more of Sun Tzu's wisdom rating anime's finest.

As a quick refresher, here's how the rating system works. Sun Tzu cited Five Essential Factors to be Mastered for Victory: Morality, Weather, Terrain, Good Leadership, and Preparation. All under consideration can receive 0-10 points in each category. However, he also cited Five Fatal Failings of Leadership: Recklessness, Cowardice, A Hasty Temper (Anger for simplicity), Delicacy of Honor (DOH), and Caring Too Much About the Troops (Over-caring). All under consideration can lose 0-10 points in each category. At the end, the scores are tallied, and the results reveal how effective a character is in Sun Tzu's eyes, with the best aiming for 40 or better.

This time, we're checking out a contemporary gem: the Ring King's party from Tales of Wedding Rings. As always, to keep things fair, we'll analyze them in the order they were formally introduced, plus we'll stick to the first season to prevent too many spoilers.

Character Analysis: Krystal Nokanatika

Morality	6	She's a loving person and loyal friend, but gets very jealous and possessive with Satou, something that leads to a lot of friction with the other Ring Princesses.
Weather	5	She's okay most of the time, but doesn't function too well at night. She's also not good with extreme conditions, like when facing the Tempest Wall outside Romka.
Terrain	5	She can handle some circumstances, but isn't very observant, plus is also a tad clumsy, like when she didn't notice Amber walking in on her and Satou in his room.
Good Leadership	4	She's got great potential, namely with talking Nephrites out of her shell, but is so indecisive and non-assertive that she's more follower than leader.
Preparation	5	She's good at helping Satou acclimate to her world, plus later helping the Ring Princesses adjust to Earth. Unfortunately, she wasn't ready for her own role as a Ring Princess, and her lack of magic/combat training is a serious problem.

Recklessness	-9	Major red flag. She constantly underestimates others, especially Satou and Alabaster, and is extremely impulsive when she's angry, nervous, or jealous, such as when she snapped at Satou over his spending time with Nephrites.
Cowardice	-7	Slight red flag. She's extremely insecure, namely over consummating her relationship. Worse, she often freezes under extreme pressure, like when she kept rejecting any possibility of returning to her world after Alabaster sent the party to Earth.
Anger	-6	She's a hothead, as well as easily triggered by anyone getting near Satou, especially Granart, a problem that steadily grows throughout the season.
Delicacy of Honor	-7	Slight red flag. She's pretty cocky at times, as well as very vain, particularly when it comes to school, fashion, or boasting of her bond with Satou.
Over-caring	-9	Major red flag. She's hopelessly in love with Satou, extremely close to Alabaster, and steadily forging deeper bonds with the other Princesses.

Morality	7	He's a great man, considering how he willfully gave up the Ring King title because it was the right thing to do, and a great friend. Sadly, pressure from his dad and older brother, coupled with Saphira's apparent rejection, badly cost him in Maasa.
Weather	10	Thanks to his strength, training, and outdoors experience, this isn't an issue.
Terrain	7	He's extremely agile and has a keen eye, yet can be clumsy, like when he accidentally walked in on Saphira sunbathing.
Good Leadership	5	He's got some strong diplomatic skills, but his indecisiveness leaves him bouncing between lone wolf and follower at the end of the season.
Preparation	5	He's well-trained and knows the land, yet got completely caught off-guard by his dad's greed, and he badly mishandled much of his courtship with Saphira.

Morality	8	He's got a good heart and is a loyal companion, but can get very perverted with his continual efforts to "excite" Satou into being with the Princesses.
Weather	10	Thanks to his wisdom, experience, and magical expertise, this isn't an issue.
Terrain	8	He's very capable, given his knowledge of the various kingdoms, but sometimes gets caught off-guard in battle, particularly by the Abyss King's knights, who nearly killed him in Nokanatika and Idonokan.
Good Leadership	7	He's got some amazing foresight, both in his world and Earth, yet sometimes goes rogue in a pinch, like when he kept pressuring Satou to use the Rings' power to defeat Granart.
Preparation	6	He's well-versed in magic and the respective Princess' history/lands, but badly mishandled the initial match with Marse, and his lack of knowledge regarding the Abyss King causes a lot of problems toward the end of the season.

Anger	-6	He's a hothead, plus easily triggered, usually when Satou bungles something, although he's also often annoyed by the various Ring Kingdoms' leaders' recklessness, particularly Nephrites' brother and Marse's dad.
Delicacy of Honor	-7	Slight red flag. He's very cocky, something that often leads him to overextend himself in battle; it also makes him think he's a love guru, a factor that causes many issues with the Princesses in the season's latter half.
Over-caring	-8	Serious red flag. He cared so much for his first love, Sumaragdi, that he left to avoid a civil war; he's also extremely protective of Satou, Marse, and the Princesses.

Weather	6	He can handle most situations, yet nearly got mauled by Romka's Tempest Wall, and often misjudges the use of his elemental rings, like when he got repeatedly pounded trying to extinguish a corrupted knight's flames in Needakitta.
Terrain	5	He's okay, but very clumsy, something that nearly killed him at Nokanatika and when he faced the Abyss King in Idonokan.
Good Leadership	4	He's got great people skills, yet is so non-assertive and awkward (especially with girls) that he's more follower than leader.
Preparation	4	He's got some good instincts, and slowly improves through steady training, but is constantly surprised by each kingdom, and his lack of experience with girls often costs him when they try to get closer.

Over-caring	-8	Serious red flag. He's helplessly in love with Krystal, plus very protective of the other Princesses, Marse, and Alabaster…so much so he gave up everything twice: the first time to be with Krystal, and the second to return to the other world to stop the Abyss King.

Good Leadership	4	She's got some potential, but is so non-assertive, most infamously with her brother, that she's more follower than leader.
Preparation	4	She's well-read and knows her history, yet her naivete and poor social skills leave her winging just about everything.

Good Leadership	6	She's very charismatic and has great diplomatic skills, yet tends to go rogue when it comes to a good fight, and she shut down when Alabaster sent the party to Earth.
Preparation	5	She's well-trained and a good planner, most famously when stopping the attack on Needakitta, but tends to wing most other things.

Weather	5	She's highly observant, especially during battle. However, being cold-blooded, she's got to be very careful with temperature extremes, as well as at night.
Terrain	5	She's quite potent, especially in her full dragon form. Unfortunately, her capabilities drop once she's away from water, and her lack of stamina is a huge problem, especially during the Idonokan arc.
Good Leadership	4	She's got potential, namely with her awareness of the Empire's ambitions, but tends to suddenly go rogue, like when she ambushed Satou at the dock.
Preparation	4	She's got some good planning skills, namely when trying to catch the Oracle "by the tail", yet tends to wing everything else.

Reviewing the Results

This cast was a mess: tons of potential badly undermined by severe insecurities or arrogance, not to mention a lot of bumbling leadership. They've got a long way to go in the fight against the Abyss King…which harkens back to what's been said all along: if you listen to Sun Tzu, you'll win; if you ignore him, you'll lose.
