Sung Jinwoo is an initially weak Hunter in Solo Leveling who joined the Hunter Association to provide financial support to his family. While raiding a D-rank dungeon, he becomes tragically trapped in a hidden double dungeon filled with powerful statue-like monsters. Unlike his fellow raiding Hunters, who were killed by the statues, he fortunately survives and is chosen as **the player** of the system. Along with being a player in the system, he is also selected as the human vessel for **Ashborn, the Shadow Monarch** who was searching for a perfect candidate. 

Subsequently, he undergoes proper training by the system and continually upgrades himself by clearing several powerful dungeons. As a result, he finally becomes strong enough to unleash the power of a Shadow Monarch and Ruler that he inherited from Ashborn. Because he is the human vessel of Ashborn, he can also fully utilize his “Ruler’s Authority”. This ability grants Rulers the power to move and control objects through telekinesis. Due to being the most powerful human vessel, his “Ruler’s Authority” power level far exceeds that of the other human vessels.

Elves are a classic race often included in fantasy stories. Whether you love playing DnD or remember iconic characters like Legolas and Galadriel from *LOTR*, it's hard to overlook them. Interestingly, elves, such as Frieren and Marcille, have gained a new-found popularity in anime in recent times. We're also seeing unconventional representations of elves, like Elda from *Otaku Elf*, and there's the upcoming series [Plus-size Elf](https://www.crunchyroll.com/news/latest/2024/1/15/plus-sized-elf-anime-announcement-2024-teaser-visual-cast). Elves seem to be everywhere!

Across various media, most elves share common traits. They are typically depicted as mystical beings closely associated with either magic or archery and, of course, they are known for their distinctive pointy ears. These characteristics hold true for anime elves as well. Who is this elf anyway? Well, fellow anime fans, Deedlit is a high elf in Record of Lodoss War. Alongside Parn, the knight, and the rest of their party, she embarks on a quest to defeat Karla the witch, and bring peace to the accursed land of Lodoss. Deedlit comes from the mystical realm known as the Forest of No Return. She is a character defined by her straightforward elvish traits and origin.

Funnily enough, she also exhibits a slight '*up on her high horse*' attitude, particularly towards dwarves. The [bickering between elves and dwarves](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ElvesVersusDwarves) is a comically common trope in fiction, reminiscent of *LOTR*. In the anime, Deedlit relies on swordsmanship and her affinity for spirits as her primary combat techniques. She tends to be the more cautious fighter of the group, frequently warning them of unforeseen dangers.

Most of what she does is reminiscent of the general idea of an elf. She comes from a mystical forest, possesses a knack for magic and the spiritual world, and exudes a rather snobbish demeanor. So, what makes her so special? After all, she serves as the designated cover girl for the entire *Record of Lodoss War* franchise.

## Deedlit In The Record Of Lodoss War: A Strong But Balanced Character

Interestingly, Deedlit is not the main character of the story. Instead, we follow the narrative from the perspective of the main protagonist, Parn. Deedlit serves as Parn's romantic interest in the story. Some might guess, “Ah, so she will end up kidnapped and calling Parn as her savior.” Well, yes and no.

In fact, she doesn’t fall into [the typical damsel-in-distress trope](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DamselInDistress) for most of the story. In the 1990 OVA, Deedlit’s introduction pretty much implies that she’s way more experienced, proficient, and composed compared to Parn. Her knowledge of spirits and magic allows her to spend most of the story looking after the others, especially the rowdy and reckless protagonist.

Writing a strong character is no easy task. On one hand, we aim for them to exude strength, allowing the audience to recognize them as a powerhouse. On the other hand, this immense power can be off-putting, especially when it surpasses reasonable limits without any explanation.

In the anime, we can see that Deedlit isn’t all-powerful. **(Spoiler Alert)** In the final episodes, Deedlit’s high elf origin becomes relevant to the main villain’s goal, and she is about to be sacrificed to resurrect the Goddess of Destruction. So, it ends up with Parn saving her in a classic 'the knight rescues the princess' style. She’s strong and a competent fighter, yet she’s not overpowered like many [Mary Sues](https://www.tckpublishing.com/what-is-a-mary-sue/). Deedlit is an example of a well-written character. Additionally, her personality is far from bland, which leads us to the next point.

Although Deedlit is supposed to be a high elf, a race that’s surrounded by fairytale-like mysticism, she’s not devoid of emotions. Oftentimes, whenever there is a character who originates from such worlds, they appear as sacred, with untouchable, ethereal beauty. It’s not the case with Deedlit. While she’s depicted as a beautiful elf, she’s far from alienating.

Although Deedlit is meant to embody the essence of a high elf, a race steeped in fairytale-like mysticism, she is not devoid of emotions. Often, characters originating from such worlds are depicted as sacred, possessing untouchable, ethereal beauty. However, this is not the case with Deedlit. While she is depicted as a beautiful elf, she remains far from alienating.

Deedlit can be hilarious and cute at times; she's known to be a bit snarky towards Ghim, the dwarf. Her excitement over lovely things can be downright giddy, and her desire for Parn's attention at dance parties is simply adorable. Deedlit embodies every trait that one would expect from 'an anime's best girl'.

Putting her cuteness aside, when Parn asks her to stand back from a fight, she chooses to fight alongside him. She refuses to embody the typical princess archetype, passively waiting for the hero to return. Deedlit demonstrates her determination and camaraderie with her fellow adventurers, all while enchanting those around her. With her unique perspective and independence of thought, she proves to be a remarkable elf waifu.

All in all, it’s no surprise that some people consider her their first waifu. The younger generation of anime fans might never have heard of *Record of Lodoss*, considering it's an old anime. [Light Yagami](https://deathnote.fandom.com/wiki/Light_Yagami) is an interesting choice since Light himself doesn't have the ability to defeat Goku, but it's the **equipment he possesses**. That's why he is #8 on this list. Light's "win condition" is having enough time to write Goku's name down in the Death Note. Assuming this is a 1-on-1 direct fight inside an arena, then Goku can easily defeat Light before he has a chance to even touch his pen. The problems for Goku would start if it were a more realistic approach, where Light would receive intel that Goku wanted to fight before actually meeting him. As long as Light could see Goku's appearance before meeting him, it's game over.


## 7 - Lelouch vi Britannia

However, unlike Light, Lelouch wouldn't encounter any issues with the battle setting. Lelouch's strength lies in his strategic mind and, notably, the power of the Geass; his **mind control** ability could easily overpower Goku. Goku's only chance would be to defeat Lelouch before he has the chance to speak. However, if both of their abilities were unknown to each other, this would be an easy win for Lelouch. I chose to place Lelouch in the #7 spot because similar to Light, I felt it wouldn't be much of a fight—more: an appearance, then an immediate winner.

I think Tomura's success would stem entirely from **surprising Goku with his abilities**. He not only possesses the physical strength that Goku would expect but also wields a set of quirks that could genuinely shake up the battle dynamics. Tomura's Decay ability, in particular, adds an element of surprise that could immediately end the battle. However, if Goku had prior knowledge of his capabilities, Tomura would probably struggle to compete against him.

This allows him to effortlessly redirect incoming attacks back at his opponent. Goku would struggle against Accelerator for this exact reason; his reliance on powerful physical strikes and energy-based attacks could put him at a potential disadvantage against Accelerator's vector manipulation. Accelerator's ability to alter the direction and magnitude of force could mean that even Goku's most devastating attacks *might* be effortlessly countered. If Goku attempts to use the Kamehameha or Spirit Bomb, Accelerator could potentially redirect the energy back at him. Now, while those examples assume Goku's attacks have vectors that Accelerator could control, realistically, all Accelerator needs to do is reverse the flow of Goku's blood, which would kill him instantly.

While [Giorno Giovanna](https://jojowiki.com/Giorno_Giovanna) is not the only Stand user from JoJo's with the ability to put up a strong fight against Goku, [Gold Experience Requiem](https://jojowiki.com/Gold_Experience_Requiem) (GER) possesses extraordinary power, allowing it to reset all actions and revert to a state of 'zero,' rendering them *null and void*. This unique ability prevents any manifestation of these actions, akin to executing a Ctrl-Z (undo) command. It would enable Giorno to easily undo any damage caused by Goku. In addition, the 'Death Loop' causes the opponent to constantly die, over and over again. It is believed that all it takes for the 'Death Loop' to occur is a **single punch** from GER landing. Since GER is an automatic Stand, Giorno doesn’t have control over what GER attacks or when it does. This means that if Goku does land a spirit bomb on Giorno, GER can reset to zero, regardless of whether Giorno is unconscious or dying.

While Goku's speed is currently his best defense against these attacks, Gojo's Domain Expansion ensures that all attacks will hit their targets. To stand a chance, Goku would need to take the fight into space hoping Gojo doesn't activate his Domain Expansion, and rely on the *hope* that Gojo's abilities wouldn't protect him from the harsh conditions of space.

# Is Shangri-La Frontier worth it?

Another batch of seasonal anime (Winter 2023) has just started, and we’re bidding farewell to the Fall 2023 season of anime. While several ongoing series continue to captivate us, only a handful of exceptional new ones have emerged—[Sousou no Frieren](https://animetrivia.app/questions/anime-database/sousou-no-frieren) being the standout. However, there are some hidden gems worth exploring. One that may not be on everyone’s watchlist is Shangri-la Frontier, and you might find yourself asking, '**Is Shangri-la Frontier worth it?**'. This show has me on my toes every week, waiting day by day for when the new episode comes; constantly thinking about where [Studio C2C](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C2C_(studio)) is taking me. With how much I’ve enjoyed this anime, sadly I haven’t seen much general traction to it. I genuinely wish more people would discuss and share their comments. It deserves more traffic and love than it currently is getting. It has a respectable [My Anime List (MAL) score of 7.97](https://myanimelist.net/anime/52347/Shangri-La_Frontier__Kusoge_Hunter_Kamige_ni_Idoman_to_su), but maybe the genre and plot aren't universally appealing.

I understand the initial apprehension, especially considering the poster featuring a bird man in tattered shorts, which might seem unappealing to many.  However, appearances can be deceiving. While the poster may give off a crazy parody vibe, delving deeper reveals a show with a surprisingly deep plot. 

Shangri-la Frontier is a shounen anime that features the adventure of Sanraku, a trash gamer, trying out a popular MMORPG called Shangri-la Frontier. Here are some of the highlights on why I believe it’s a great show and a good shounen to add to your watchlist.

## Sanraku's Skillful Progression

The main character, Sanraku, has only played unbalanced indie games filled with enough bugs to make it barely playable. His lack of experience playing a balanced AAA Game means he’s entering a new MMORPG with a whole new perspective. Sanraku feels the pressure to catch up because he is significantly behind the rest of the players; otherwise, he will never be able to get ahead. As usual with “*start from the bottom*” style anime, you might anticipate a sudden power boost to propel him forward, rapidly increasing his level or abilities. Ironically, he finds himself on a roller coaster of experiences, encountering both nerfs and buffs along the way. Surprisingly, this wasn’t a problem for him. The level of analysis he possesses, gained from exploiting bugs in unbalanced indie games, provides him with a deeper understanding of video game mechanics. This enables him to adopt a  different approach to the game, relying solely on gaming skills. The series sneaks in major events that favor his abilities, reminiscent of [Soulslike](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soulslike) games similar to Elden Ring, emphasizing the importance of skill to overcome, and beat the game.

## Shangri-La's Lore is Amazing

Each episode reveals new information about Shangri-la Frontier. I personally anticipated a linear plot or predictable patterns, but the show does a great job at changing its pace in various styles, encouraging viewers to think about the intricacies of the game world.Similar to many video games, much of the in-game world remains secret. Players look to forums and walkthroughs for help, yet Sanraku manages to uncover some of these secrets unknown to other players. The world’s greatest plot is also a mystery to most players, allowing us to sit back and anticipate the show slowly revealing its secrets to us.The brilliance of the series lies in its ability to balance wild and unexpected events while maintaining a sense of logic and believability. Sanraku’s discovery may be a rare chance but it doesn't fall into the realm of the impossible. Shangri-La strikes a delicate balance, functioning as a double-edged sword. It introduces unique events that gradually deviate from the norm of an MMORPG. However, if the show veers too far, it becomes distasteful and causes the over the top nature to alienate gaming fans. Conversely, if it follows too closely to the stereotypical overpowered storyline, it may become monotonous.

## Strong Animation Is a Requirement

Shangri-la Frontier is produced by C2C, the production company lacks widely acclaimed hits which could be one reason for its limited popularity. Regardless, the show’s color scheme uses vibrant hues and contrasting colors that help captivate a viewer’s interest. The shadows and highlights are used correctly giving a good depth to the animation. Another strong contribution is the simplicity of the death animations, similar to [Log Horizon](https://animetrivia.app/questions/anime-database/log-horizon), monsters and characters turn into vanishing pixels. This simplifies the animation process, and contributes to the show's consistent quality. Many recent releases have had fluctuations in animation quality. [Jujutsu Kaisen](https://animetrivia.app/questions/anime-database/jujutsu-kaisen) is a big example, attempting to push the boundaries of animation but falls short in maintaining consistent quality. It’s a huge risk an anime can take but it’s always safer to give out consistent, great quality. You don’t need to reinvent the wheel to attract viewers.

## Should You Watch Shangri-La Frontier?

Shangri-la Frontier's true gems lie in its intricacies, those subtle plot details that are best savored through firsthand viewing. Shangri-la Frontier offers a captivating blend of elements—a formidable protagonist, a rich gaming lore, commendable CGI for its monstrous encounters, and a consistently high-quality animation. It boasts a respectable My Anime List (MAL) score, yet whether it deserves higher levels of hype is a judgment I leave in your hands.
