Sun Tzu and Anime: Last Dungeon Boonies Kid Character Analysis

Sun Tzu and Anime: Suppose a Kid from the Last Dungeon Boonies moved to a starter town? Character Analysis

February is here, so let’s celebrate the new month with more of Sun Tzu’s knowledge rating anime legends.

As a quick refresher, here’s how the rating system works. Sun Tzu cited Five Essential Factors to be Mastered for Victory: Morality, Weather, Terrain, Good Leadership, and Preparation. All under consideration can receive 0-10 points in each category. However, he also cited Five Fatal Failings of Leadership: Recklessness, Cowardice, A Hasty Temper (Anger for simplicity), Delicacy of Honor (DOH), and Caring Too Much About the Troops (Over-caring). All under consideration can lose 0-10 points in each category. At the end, the scores are tallied, and the results reveal how effective a character is in Sun Tzu’s eyes, with the best aiming for 40 or better.

This time, we’re checking out a really fun lot: the primary cast from Suppose a Kid from the Last Dungeon Boonies moved to a starter town?. As always, to keep things fair, we’ll analyze them in the order they were formally introduced, plus we’ll stick to the first season’s events to avoid any spoilers.

Victory Factors

FactorScoreReasoning
Morality10He’s one of the nicest protagonists of recent memory: perpetually cheerful, generous, and so genuinely kind his village chieftain Alka famously said, “Calling him an angel would be an understatement.”
Weather10Not only is he exceptionally keen in the outdoors, he can summon rain at will.
Terrain10Thanks to his strength, speed, and agility, this isn’t an issue.
Good Leadership2He’s got potential, namely while calming Allan at the festival, yet his crippling lack of confidence makes him more follower than leader.
Preparation5He’s very good at training, magic, cooking, and cleaning. However, his naivete often holds him back, like not realizing giant locusts and fire-breathing lizards AKA dragons are monsters, not “wild animals.”
Total37

Fatal Failings

FailingScoreReasoning
Recklessness-10Epic red flag. He perpetually underestimates others, and has an extremely bad habit of impulsively misinterpreting situations, such as when he confronted the corrupted Merthophan…only to inexplicably accuse him of being drunk.
Cowardice-8Serious red flag. He’s extremely insecure, despite numerous attempts by friends to assuage him, something that nearly killed him fighting Eug’s golem; he’s also very shy, namely with girls.
Anger-2He gets angry a few times, but it takes a lot to truly make him snap.
Delicacy of Honor0He’s very modest, so no worries here.
Over-caring-5He cares very deeply for his friends, and he’s also very close to his neighbors in his home village, Kunlun.

Score: 12 (Great potential, yet deeply flawed.)

Victory Factors

FactorScoreReasoning
Morality5She’s got a good heart, but gets really venomous when she snaps, particularly during her numerous spats with Alka.
Weather10Thanks to her awareness, keen eye, and command of Wind magic, this isn’t an issue.
Terrain4She’s observant, yet constantly gets caught off-guard by Alka, both via the latter’s teleportation orb and later during the dungeon arc; she’s also a tad clumsy.
Good Leadership7She’s very skilled with deception and manipulation, something she expertly used to defeat Abaddon and Eug, yet tends to go rogue when Alka appears.
Preparation7She’s very organized, namely when she learned the Disenchant Rune, then went undercover to save her dad and later retrieve the Holy Sword, yet still wings things on occasion.
Total33

Fatal Failings

FailingScoreReasoning
Recklessness-10Epic red flag. She constantly underestimates others, especially Alka, which often gets her cursed; she also tends to impulsively overreact when she’s angry or nervous, like when she snapped during her first meeting with Lloyd.
Cowardice-4She’s initially cowed by Alka, plus has a few shy moments with Lloyd, but steadily gets bolder throughout the season, hence the lower rating.
Anger-10Epic red flag. She’s got an explosive temper, and is extremely easily triggered, most often by Alka, although she also exploded on Lloyd’s classmates outside her house.
Delicacy of Honor-5She’s pretty cocky initially, although being with Lloyd humbled her, hence another lower rating.
Over-caring-7Slight red flag. She’s in love with Lloyd, despite claiming they have an “auntie-nephew” relationship, famously evidenced when she worried about him during the dungeon arc; she’s also very close to Mikona.

Victory Factors

FactorScoreReasoning
Morality2She’s not all bad, considering how she grew a magically infused wheat field and handed out its fruits to stave off a demon-induced famine, plus took in Merthophan after the Abaddon arc. Unfortunately, the rest of the time she’s so selfish (particularly with Lloyd) that Vritra called her “the pinnacle of narcissism.”
Weather10Thanks to her strength, outdoors experience, and magic, this isn’t an issue.
Terrain2She’s potent due to her strength, yet extremely clumsy, such as when she collapsed a dungeon while creating “a shortcut”.
Good Leadership2She’s got some good points, mostly when tracking Sou, yet is usually so wild she’s more lone wolf than leader.
Preparation5She’s capable, most famously when planning to stop Eug and Sou at the Exhibition, but usually winds up winging things.
Total21

Fatal Failings

FailingScoreReasoning
Recklessness-10Epic red flag. She perpetually underestimates others, namely Sou and Vritra, plus is wildly impulsive, like when she literally blasted Rol out of a tower after the latter denied knowing where Lloyd was.
Cowardice-10Epic red flag. She’s a vicious bully, mostly with Marie and Selen, plus completely shut down when Eug sealed her power away.
Anger-10Epic red flag. She’s got a violent temper and is extremely easily triggered, usually by Marie’s jabs about her age, although Selen isn’t far behind, given their competition for Lloyd.
Delicacy of Honor-9Major red flag. She’s extremely cocky, plus painfully vain, both of which fuel her constant rampages, along with her numerous threats to burn Azami to the ground.
Over-caring-10Epic red flag. Her obsession with Lloyd makes her so over-the-top jealous she curses anyone who gets near him; it also drove her to steal Vritra’s scale to make the belt that bound itself to Selen…all so she could make Lloyd a “stain-resistant apron.”

Victory Factors

FactorScoreReasoning
Morality5She’s got a good heart and is a very loyal friend, but can turn extremely venomous in one of her jealous moods, like when she interrupted Riho’s first chat with Lloyd by knocking her into a statue.
Weather10Thanks to her training, magic, and later her belt, this isn’t an issue.
Terrain5She’s capable most of the time, namely when using her belt for rapid movement and as a long-range weapon; still, she’s got a clumsy streak, plus isn’t always very observant, such as when she capsized the boat she and Lloyd were using at the hotel.
Good Leadership5She’s pretty authoritative with Vritra and her classmates, yet usually goes completely rogue whenever she sees Lloyd.
Preparation7She’s very capable, like when she wanted to find Marie to win Lloyd’s acceptance to the Academy, plus later when she freed Vritra from the egg, but still wings things at times.
Total32

Fatal Failings

FailingScoreReasoning
Recklessness-10Epic red flag. She constantly underestimates others and is one of anime’s most impulsive characters, especially when she’s angry or jealous, one infamous example being when she rush-ordered a wagonload of fire-bombs to get out of a family trip.
Cowardice-5She’s a tad timid at first, has a few shy moments with Lloyd, and also panicked when her dad was injured during the hotel arc.
Anger-10Epic red flag. She’s got a nuclear-level temper, plus is extremely easily triggered, namely when anyone gets near Lloyd, like when Philo hinted one his comments was intended for her, only to have Selen snap back, “No one is interested in your fantasy!”
Delicacy of Honor-7Slight red flag. She’s very vain at times, along with very cocky, such as when she lent Riho clothing, then said, “Madame, it pains me to say you have the manners of a boar.”
Over-caring-10Epic red flag. She’s the walking definition of this issue. Her pathological obsession with Lloyd not only makes her one of anime’s most jealous girls, it also makes her so melodramatic she’s referred to as “bonkers” and a “psychopath.”

Weather10Due to his training, keen eye, and strength, this isn’t an issue.
Terrain5He’s observant, but is constantly caught off-guard in combat, most infamously during the magic training arc, where he was badly mauled by Selen and Riho.
Good Leadership3He’s got some initial potential, yet his indecisiveness ultimately makes him more follower than leader.
Preparation5He’s highly-trained with his ax, plus well-versed in the magic tournament where his classmates faced Rol, but ultimately ends up winging everything else.
Total29

Fatal Failings

FailingScoreReasoning
Recklessness-10Epic red flag. He almost always underestimates foes, plus his impulsive need to prove himself nearly gets him killed several times, including where he arrogantly offered to let Lloyd punch him square in the face.
Cowardice-9Major red flag. Despite his gusto, he’s notoriously terrified of monsters, and inadvertently earning King Azami’s approval (plus the resulting limelight) turned him into a perpetual nervous wreck.
Anger-7Slight red flag: He’s a hothead, and easily triggered when he’s annoyed, most often by the attention he gained after the dungeon arc.
Delicacy of Honor-4He’s extremely cocky at first—so much so his dad famously called him “an empty-headed ne’er-do-well”—but Lloyd’s saving him tempered most of that, hence the lower rating.
Over-caring-4He greatly respects Lloyd, even asking the academy to enroll him as thanks for his aid during the Abaddon bout; he also tried to become the latter’s apprentice.

Reviewing the Results

This cast was a real doozy: full of great potential, yet often undone by small issues that, no doubt, contributed to the series’ infamous slapstick nature. Still, that all harkens back to what’s been said all along: follow Sun Tzu, and you’ll win; ignore him, and you’ll lose.
